The cold winter months begin, and with them, the trembling before the high heating costs—the most important thing to save money: tight windows.
The first heaters are gradually put into operation with the falling outdoor temperatures. But this winter, you have to dig deep into your pockets for warm four walls. Prices for energy, gas, oil, and wood, and thus heating, have skyrocketed. Savings are made wherever possible, and only tight windows can help with heating.
To do this, they must be set correctly. A tricky undertaking, which is better carried out by a specialized enterprise. Above all, tenants are okay here because windows are landlord things. If there is a draught, the windows hang crooked in the frame, or the seal is crumbling out, the landlord should be contacted. The landlord must then remedy the problems.
The situation is different, however, if the handles are too stiff or too light, or if the windows are very noisy. If a lot of outside noise penetrates the room and a strong draft is noticeable, these indicate leaky windows. The cause can be an incorrectly adjusted contact pressure. Here you can certainly do something to keep the room heat longer.
Many windows have small roller pins on the sash for this purpose, some of which can be adjusted without tools. A minor groove marks several settings on the roll pin in the thicker part of the ring. In most cases, there are five different strengths of the contact pressure:
- The contact pressure is highest if the groove points vertically toward the seal.
- The contact pressure is high if the groove points 45 degrees toward the seal.
- The contact pressure is precisely in the middle of the groove and is parallel to the window frame.
- The contact pressure is low if the groove points 45 degrees away from the seal.
- The contact pressure is lowest if the groove points vertically away from the seal.
To adjust the pin, pull it up and turn it, then push it back in. Then check how the window opens and closes and whether the external noise improves or worsens. If it does not improve or even worsen, the adjustment can be quickly returned to the original state.
Never close the window handle with force – because the contact pressure is too high and stresses the mechanism. You will then have to pay for any damage yourself!
